Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about MRI imaging at Southern Imaging Services.
General MRI Questions
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues inside your body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, making it safe for most patients.
Most MRI scans take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being imaged and whether contrast dye is used. Our technologists will let you know the expected duration before your scan begins.
MRI is considered very safe for most people. There is no ionizing radiation involved. However, because MRI uses strong magnets, patients with certain metal implants, pacemakers, or other devices may not be able to have an MRI. Always inform our staff about any implants or devices.
For personal injury patients referred by attorneys, you typically need a physician's order for your MRI. Our team can help coordinate with your treating physician to ensure all necessary paperwork is in order.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or underwire. You may be asked to change into a gown. Leave jewelry, piercings, and valuables at home.
For most MRI scans, you can eat and drink normally before your appointment. If you are having an MRI with contrast dye, you may be asked to fast for a few hours beforehand. We will provide specific instructions when you schedule.
Southern Imaging Services delivers results to your physician within 24 hours of your scan. This fast turnaround is essential for personal injury cases and treatment planning.

MRI is excellent for diagnosing disc herniations, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, ligament injuries, vertebral fractures, and other spinal conditions commonly seen in accident cases.
MRI can identify soft tissue tears (ligaments, tendons, cartilage), joint injuries, muscle tears, bone bruising, and other musculoskeletal injuries that may not appear on X-rays.
We provide detailed, comprehensive MRI reports specifically designed to document injuries for legal purposes. Our board-certified radiologists provide clear findings that help attorneys build strong cases for their clients.
